what is reiki

Reiki is a Japanese technique that reduces stress, helps the body to relax and promotes healing. It is works through the palms of the therapist’s hands. It is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us and it is this energy that keeps us alive. If our life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more able to be happy and healthy.

A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. It treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and it always creates a beneficial effect. It also works well with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

The ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an attunement given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life. [Source: The International Center for Reiki Training]

how can reiki help?

Reiki is a technique that aids the body in releasing stress and tension by creating deep relaxation. Because of this, Reiki promotes healing and health. The Reiki system is comprised of techniques for transmitting this subtle energy through the hands, eyes or chakras into the human subtle energy system. Reiki restores energy balance and vitality by relieving the physical and emotional effects of unreleased stress. It gently and effectively opens blocked meridians, nadas and chakras, and clears the energy bodies, leaving one feeling relaxed and at peace. [source: Laurelle Gaia]

describe a session

In a standard treatment Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client is usually laying on a massage table but treatments can also be given while the client is seated or even standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places her hands on or near the clients body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the clients needs. Each position is held for three to ten minutes depending on how much Reiki the client needs at each position. The whole treatment usually lasts about 60 minutes.

Depending on my clients’ requirements I combine Reiki with a guided visualisation meditation which you can use at anytime. This teaches you to clear your own chakras and strengthen the flow of your energy bodies whenever you need it.

tarot card readings

while i was visiting africa i rented a space at the quarterly windsong bohemian market in port elizabeth and did some tarot readings. the experience was amazing. and as a bonus a beautiful cat came and join me on the table for a while. i did ten human readings and every person was open to what the cards shared with them. to me a tarot card reading is a therapy session. i also believe that the cards show us possibilities. what we do with those possibilities are up to us.

about a dreamer’s life

Do you dream of freedom? Do you wonder what it would feel like to be completely free? To step into the world with only a suitcase and a passport? To quit your life? All of your life? Your marriage, your job, your home, your stuff?

This book gives you a glimpse inside the mind of a woman on such a journey. She shares her most intimate moments of despair, but also shows us the mysterious joy that empowers you when you accept yourself exactly as you are.

Take a journey of self-discovery, one that weaves between dreams and reality. From meerkat encounters in Namibia to the streets of London, from small towns in South Africa to snowy Chicago Winters. Between these pages you’ll find stories and people, both real and imagined.

mindfulness workshop in port elizabeth, south africa

Did you know you can train your brain to act the way you want it to? Yes you can! All you need is to be mindful. Mindfulness exercises weren’t invented just to help monks who live in those ancient temples. It’s for anyone who wants to see life from a different perspective.

Recognise this? You wake in the morning and decide that today is the day that you are going to be nice. You are not going to lose your temper. You are going to stay calm. But, long before you arrive at work you’ve already grumbled at your partner or spouse or kids for not putting the toothpaste cap back on, shouted a few choice words at the rude taxi driver who stopped in to the middle of the street and felt an overwhelming anxiety for the big amount of work waiting for you at the office.

enter … mindfulness

Mindfulness is not obscure or exotic. It’s familiar to us, because it’s what we already do, how we already are. We can be present. And guess what?  It doesn’t require us to change who we are. All we need to do is allow ourselves to cultivate these natural qualities with simple practices – that are scientifically demonstrated by the way – to benefit us in many ways.

So, come and join me for a fun-filled afternoon. We are going to laugh, go quiet, taste raisins, play with crayons, do some breathing and the find stillness in our bodies and minds.

When you go home, you will be armed with practical tips and exercises that you can apply anytime to bring yourself back in the moment. As a bonus, you will also know how to taste your food, really taste it, not just gobble it up as quickly as possible.

During this Workshop, you will learn how to…

Practice mindfulness

Increase your ability to relax while resting in the present moment

Improve your ability to cope with stressful situations

Release tensions and increase energy

Cultivate skills in being present and so bring more joy, creativity and happiness into your life
